Start Making Money As A Sash Window Repair Service Business

By Peter Caldwell

These quaint windows from another era have many advantages over the styles currently in use. They also require occasional maintenance, or they can become frustratingly ineffective. Making money as a sash window repair service may be just the niche business you may have been looking for.

This style originated in the mid 17th century and was quite common in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is composed of usually two panels of multiple glass panes. The panels are capable of sliding, usually vertically but sometimes horizontally, to open. It allows the maximum opening capacity of fifty percent. Both sides of the glass panes can be cleaned from inside the building.

In the hung sash version the top panel can open downward and the bottom panel upward, allowing continuous circulation of air within the building. As warm air rises and exits from the top, an equal volume of cooler, fresh air enters at the bottom.

This arrangement is healthier than what is common today in homes that are tightly sealed. Sometimes there is no option for allowing fresh air in at all. Toxins in building materials, furniture, and misnamed air fresheners, are recirculated through forced air systems. The inhabitants are deprived of fresh air in these homes and continually exposed to toxic chemicals.

The proper functioning of the unit depends on counterbalancing weights hung over pulleys and down inside the frame, or hidden springs. Compression weatherstripping also helps to hold the panels in whatever position they are left. These mechanisms will need to be maintained and rebalanced as, over time, the soft wood they are made of can rot, warp, swell or shrink. Adding layers of paint carelessly is another problem. Eventually the panels can either fail to slide, or slide too readily, slamming downward. They can rattle in the wind, leak heat or cool air, and allow drafts to enter.

If properly maintained they will work as if new again. Functionality and beauty will be returned and their life extended. The owners will be appreciative of the work done, and will gladly pay the cost of good work.

Making money as a sash window repair service is not only possible, but likely. You will need only to be located in a community having them in it's homes. They are again being used in some new home construction.
